Basic Drawing

  
This class takes place over six weeks, once a week, for a total of 6 sessions. Fridays, June 12 - July 17, 4:30 - 6:00pm ET .
An introduction to the basic principles of drawing for comic books and illustrations with instruction in composition, perspective and foreshortening, as well as simple lighting and shading methods. Analysis of form and structure through the use of basic shapes is also covered. 
Instructor: MARIA LAURA SANAPO
Maria Laura Sanapo is an Italian comic artist and illustrator. After graduating in foreign languages, she decided to become an artist, beginning her apprenticeship with Marco Santucci, (DC Comics artist Marvel and Bonelli) his mentor and husband.She worked for Valiant (Faith), Wired magazine, Titan Comics and Dreamworks (“The Penguins of Madagascar”, “The Puss in Boots”). She worked as a cover artist for Zenescope and interior artist for the DC Comics series ‘Bombshells’. She worked for Dynamite both as cover artist and interior artist for the Grimm and Charmed series, Sheena, Red Sonja, Vampirella and as a cover artist for the Titan Assassin’s Creed comic book series based on the famous video game. At the moment she works for Dynamite and Archie Comics in the series “Red Sonja & Vampirella meet Betty & Veronica”. She loves music and opera and she performs in her free time.

Instructor: Fernando Ruiz
A graduate of the Kubert School, Fernando Ruiz has been a professional illustrator and cartoonist for over twenty six years. For twenty-two years, he was a writer and artist for Archie Comics where he worked on such titles as Archie's Weird Mysteries, the Eisner nominated Life With Archie Magazine, the extremely popular Archie Vs Predator, and many other Archie Comics publications. He has also written and drawn for other companies such as Dynamite, Dark Horse, Image Comics and Pixie Trix Comix. 
In addition to his comic book work, he has also done a significant amount of commercial illustration and advertising for a number of different clients including Ogilvy CommonHealth Worldwide, J Connelly, and others. Fernando is also an instructor at the Kubert School where he has been teaching for twenty-five years. In 2016, he won the Outstanding Instructor award.

Digital Coloring

This class takes place over six weeks, once a week, for a total of 6 sessions. Mondays, June 8 - July 13, 6:00pm - 7:30pm ET.
Digital Coloring - Students develop their use of color, tools, and techniques geared towards the illustration and comic book markets. Utilizing Photoshop students will produce quality samples that will include a variety of covers and narrative art pages.

Instructors: BRIAN & KRISTY MILLER
Brian & Kristy Miller are founders of the digital color studio Hi-Fi Colour Design. The team at Hi-Fi colors comics like The Flash, Aquaman, Doctor Who, Superman, Teen Titans, Harley Quinn, Scooby Apocalypse, and more. As the authors of several art-instruction books including; Hi-Fi Color for Comics, the creative duo is also focused on art education. They created Hi-Fi Academy as an outreach program where they visit schools and art galleries to share comic art education with the public. In addition to his work coloring comics, Brian is also a respected illustrator known for his work for Star Wars, The X-Files, Doctor Who, Rick & Morty, and Archer as well as his pop culture and gallery artwork.  In addition to running Hi-Fi, Kristy is an anthropology/archaeology professor with a PhD in adult education.

Digital Lettering

SUMMER II - This class takes place over six weeks, once a week, for a total of 6 sessions. Saturdays, July 11 - Aug. 15, 10:00am - 11:30am ET.
Digital Lettering - Students are instructed in the digital techniques of lettering while learning the fundamentals with the use of Adobe Illustrator. Word balloons, captions, sound effects (SFX) and title lettering are covered.

Taylor Esposito is a freelance letterer for numerous publishers (DC Comics, Dynamite, and Legendary). He is also a former staff letterer for DC and production artist/digital compositor for Marvel Entertainment. He operates his own graphic design business specializing in logo design, lettering, and comic book production. Taylor is instructing our Lettering and Digital Production classes.

Inking

This class takes place over six weeks, once a week, for a total of 6 sessions. Mondays, June 8 - July 14. 
This course introduces the student to the variety of methods and materials used in producing B&W art for comic books and illustrations. Students will experiment with various traditional media including ink, pens, and ink wash with the aim of expanding skills and creating a more diverse portfolio. 

INSTRUCTOR: Carli Ihde
Carli Ihde is a Kubert School alumni from the class of 2011. After receiving the Inkwell award in her 2nd year and graduating her 3rd, Carli went on to become a finisher/inker for Vertigo's Hellblazer and IDW's Womanthology. Carli has illustrated published books and her animation work for the TV show HitRECord helped to earn her and the other creators an Emmy win. After working as a professional cartoonist at an advertisement agency for 4 years, Carli went on to work as a freelancer/artist for hire. She soon lent her skills as a comic book cover artist for multiple Dynamite titles. Along with published works she also excels in large scale murals throughout Wisconsin, pumpkin sculpture, live painting and teaching technique and the importance of art and creativity in the community. 
Carli now works as a full time tattoo artist in Appleton, Wisconsin, but has gained Instagram fame with her in progress inking demonstration videos.

Instructor: JOE PRADO
Joe Prado started his career back in the early 90s working as a Professional comic-book artist and illustrator on the Brazilian Market. During that time he produced hundreds of Fantasy, Horror, Super-Heroes and Sci-Fi illustrations for a myriad of books and magazines.
In 2004 he started to produce comics for the US market. Among his credits are BLACKEST NIGHT, BRIGHTEST DAY, AQUAMAN, ACTION COMICS, SUPERMAN, GREEN LANTERN, BIRDS OF PREY, RANN/THANAGAR WAR, TEEN TITANS, THE WARLORD, RED SONJA, THE PHANTOM,  JUSTICE LEAGUE, MULTIVERSITY, CYBORG and JUSTICE LEAGUE AMERICA.
Joe is the recipient of two INKWELL AWARDS, in 2016, won the INKWELL AWARD for “Favorite Inker”. And in 2018 for “Props - Talent who deserves more attention”.
In 2018, Joe joined artist Ivan Reis, and writer Brian Michael Bendis on SUPERMAN, book that he still works on til this day
Besides being an artist and inker, Joe also is Co-Owner/Talent Manager of CHIAROSCURO STUDIOS, representing dozens of comic-book artists across the Globe.

Narrative Art I - Sergio Cariello

This class takes place over six weeks, once a week, for a total of 6 sessions. Fridays, June 12 - July 17, 6:00pm - 7:30pm ET.
Students are instructed in the essentials of sequential storytelling for comic books, graphic novels, comic strips, webcomix and storyboards. The basics of page layout and composition are matched with expanding the student's understanding of drama and action for maximum narrative effect!
Instructor: SERGIO CARIELLO
Sergio Cariello (born April 23, 1964 in Recife, Brazil) is a Brazilian-American comic book artist.
He has done work for many major comic publishers through his career, including Marvel Comics and DC Comics, as well as popular independent companies like CrossGen Comics and Dynamite Entertainment.
He is the younger brother of comics artist Octavio Cariello. Sergio Cariello knew he wanted to be a cartoonist at age 5. At age 11 he created "Frederico, the Detective," a weekly comic strip for his local paper. He wrote and drew the whole strip himself. It ran until he was 14.  Cariello worked on his first comic book, "Dagon, the Worlds of HP Lovecraft," while attending the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art.

Instructor: TOM MANDRAKE

Tom graduated from The Kubert School in 1979 and went directly to work as Art Director for Modern Drummer Magazine. Since 1980 Tom has worked in the comic book field on a wide variety of titles including Batman, The Spectre and Swamp Thing for DC Comics, The Punisher, The Hulk Unchained and The New Mutants for Marvel Comics, X-Files 30 Days of Night and Fringe for Wildstorm Comics and Creeps with Image Comics. Toms graphic novel projects include a version of Shakespeare's Hamlet and the gritty adventure story The Safest Place. He has illustrated books including the young adult novel The Forest King: The Woodlarks Shadow. Tom was the Art Director for Comic Book Illustrations for the award winning independent film Zombie Prom.

Narrative Art II - Jan Duursema - SOLD OUT

This class takes place over six weeks, once a week, for a total of 6 sessions. Tuesdays, June 9 - July 14, 6:00pm - 7:30pm ET.
Students hone their drawing and storytelling skills in this class, which focuses on producing art for comic books and graphic novels. Traditional visual communication techniques will be reinforced with further exercises in sequential storytelling. Body language, facial expressions, dramatic lighting, camera angles, lettering, B&W rendering techniques are just a fraction of the tools at the disposal of the narrative artist.  
INSTRUCTOR: JAN DUURSEMA
Jan Duursema's first published comics work appeared in Heavy Metal (July 1979). She began working for DC Comics in 1980. She co-created Arion, Lord of Atlantis. Her first work for Marvel Comics as well as her first work on the Star Wars franchise, appeared in Star Wars #92. Back at DC, she drew the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons comic book series for three years. Her association with Dark Horse Comics Star Wars franchise began with Star Wars: Chewbacca #2. She has since drawn several Star Wars series for Dark Horse including the Star Wars: Darth Maul mini-series and Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones. Duursema is also the artist of Star Wars: Legacy and Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi.

Instructor: ERICA SCHULTZ
Students are instructed in the principles of comic book & graphic novel scriptwriting and are encouraged to develop their own creator-owned properties by scripting and writing compelling stories with enticing plots and multi-dimensional characters.
Erica is a comic book writer, editor and publisher. She has chronicled the adventures of such well-known characters as Daredevil, Xena: Warrior Princess, the sisters of Charmed, and Hawkgirl. She is also the co-creator and publisher of M3, which is the 2012 winner of the Burbank International Film Festival for Best Comic Book. She has worked for companies such as DC Entertainment, Marvel Entertainment, Image Comics, and Dynamite Entertainment.

Amy Chu is a professional writer for DC Entertainment, Marvel Entertainment, other comic book publishers, and most recently, Netflix. Her work includes Wonder Woman, Poison Ivy, Red Sonja, X-Men, Ant-Man and Deadpool. She is also the co-founder of Alpha Girl Comics, publisher of Girls Night Out, The VIP Room, and Meridien City. 

She is a frequent guest and speaker at comic conventions around the world. Chu received dual degrees from Wellesley College (East Asian Studies) and MIT (Architectural Design) and an MBA from Harvard Business School. She has many years of start-up and business consulting experience, including serving as the Executive Director of the Asian American Arts Alliance where she provided management and technical assistance to artists and arts organizations.
