Talent from The Kubert School

Mark Gonyea
Author/Graphic Designer
Name: Mark Gonyea
First job after finishing school: Graphic Artist for Heavy Metal magazine. I wasn’t there long, about 6 months. They moved their offices from Manhattan out to Long Island and I was already thinking of moving back to upstate NY so I didn’t follow. Still an incredible opportunity and definitely a major factor in securing my next graphic design position in Vermont.
Current job: Children’s book author and freelance graphic artist.
Reason I love/hate my job: I love the creative freedom of working for myself but I hate the financial insecurity of not having a regular paycheck.
Current city: Hinesburg, Vermont
I started drawing when: Always. The first thing I remember drawing was copying Peanuts cartoons out of the Sunday paper. I used to take them into my 1st grade class and sell them to classmates. The school did not find this amusing.
Favorite artist: Darwyn Cooke.
Favorite book: H.G. Wells, The Time Machine.
Film I could watch over and over: Let’s say Star Wars is a given but after that… Highlander.
I’m listening to: Talking Heads. Thomas Dolby. Flaming Lips. Aquabats. If I’m doing something where I need to concentrate a bit more I’ll listen to a movie score. Yes, probably Star Wars while I work.
Last comic book I read: A friend gave me a stack of SAGA comics so I’m reading my way through those this week. Personally, I don’t really buy comics every week anymore. I’ll usually wait till someone suggests a great storyline and pick up the graphic novel.
Drawing instrument of choice: Scratchboard but I mostly use a computer these days. I use Adobe Illustrator for almost everything I do. I use InDesign a good amount and a bit of Photoshop for scanning/photo editing.
Currently working on: My next children’s book that’s coming out this fall, a new series of graphic design posters (possibly a kickstarter), and a Christmas fabric pattern for a local client.
