Incoming 1st Year Scholarship

The Joe Kubert Scholarship - Ulysses Roseo Decided in August, 2019. This very special award honoring The Kubert School's founder is based on merit and worth $2,500 and is available to all incoming registered first year students. 

Sergio Cariello Scholarship - Noah Jacquez Decided in August, 2019. $1,000 Award for a worthy incoming student going to TKS. Sponsored by comic book artist and an alumni of the school, Sergio Cariello.

Norman Maurer Memorial Scholarship - ADRIAN WOOLNOUGH Norman Albert Maurer (May 13, 1926 – November 23, 1986), a comic book artist and writer, was also a director and producer of films and television shows. $2000 Award for a worthy 1st Year Student going into the 2nd Year at TKS; Sponsored by the  family and friends of Norman Maurer.

Dave Simons Inkwell Memorial Scholarship - RYUSEI SAWADA Dave Simons was an American comic book artist known for his work on Conan, Ghost Rider, Red Sonja, and Spider-Man for Marvel Comics, and Forgotten Realms for DC Comics. $1000 Award for a worthy 2nd Year Student going into the 3rd Year at TKS; Sponsored by the Inkwell Awards.

 

The La Greca Scholarship - ELENA MORTON $1500 Award to 2nd Year Student going into the 3rd Year to encourage and support emerging comic artists and cartoonists; Sponsored by Charlie LaGreca and Pop Culture Classroom.

 

Dave Monahan Memorial Scholarship - KEN NSIDINANYA Kubert School alumnus Dave Monahan was a graduate of the Class of ’99. He worked in the Kubert Art Store before starting to receive freelance work from DC Comics (Pirana Press) and Dark Horse Comics. This scholarship was set up in his name after his untimely death due to a sudden illness shortly after he graduated.

$2000 Award for a worthy 2nd Year Student going into the 3rd Year at TKS; Sponsored by the Monahan family.

New Talent Showcase #1

Congratulations are due to 2016 graduate Minkyu Jung, Minkyu who originally came to the school from South Korea, was chosen by DC Comics, Talent Development department to be a part of their 2016 Artist's Workshop. Minkyu's work which has previously appeared in GOTHAM ACADEMY will also be a part of NEW TALENT SHOWCASE #1, where he's drawn a story featuring both Catwoman and Wonder Woman.

New Jersey Comic Book Expo - November 19th & 20th

The Kubert School will be attending the New Jersey Comic Book Expo at the New Jersey Convention and Exposition Center on November 19th and 20th. Stop by our table and say hello.


There will be a panel discussion at 3 p.m. on Saturday that will discuss the schools forty year history, with  alumni including Adam Kubert, Tom Mandrake, Jan Duursema, Rags Morales, Fernando Ruiz, Cory Smith, Marki Wolfson, and Idan Knafo, and a few other surprise guests.

Founder\'s Day

It has been forty years since Joe Kubert opened the doors to what was then the world's only school dedicated solely to cartooning and graphic art. Today we are celebrating with our first ever Founder's Day.


All of our student's were encouraged to wear their school t-shirts and in the afternoon they will attend a lecture by visiting comic historian Arlen Schumer, who will speak about the life and career of our founder Joe Kubert.

Aftershock ALTERS perceptions with new comic

2009 Kubert School graduate Tamra Bonvillian, is working on a new project with Aftershock Comics, ALTERS is a new comic series written by Paul Jenkins with art by Lelia Leiz. The story features Chalice, the first transgender leading character in comics.



Tamra is the colorist on RAT QUEENS and Wayward from Image Comics, MOON GIRL AND DEVIL DINOSAUR from Marvel Comics and you can read an interview with her on our website here:

Pop Culture Event - Sat. July 23rd

Student Anthony Ojeda and graduates Adam Page and Petterson Oliveira will be celebrating Pop Culture with Barnes and Noble bookstore at their Bridgewater, New Jersey location. The event includes free art and comic giveaways, cosplay and more.


It takes place Saturday July 23rd from 7 pm to close. For more information follow the links below.

Kicking it NEXUS style

The Kubert School has teamed up with the Dare 2 Draw art mentoring program to provide artists and mentors for their first published anthology. Featuring Mike Baron and Steve Rude's classic independent comic book character Nexus, the anthology will spotlight new talent (artists) teamed up with industry professionals (writers).


Mike Chen, Adam and Andy Kubert are among some of the project's professional mentors, while Idan Knafo and Cecillia Liang of the class of 2016 and 2011 graduate Elisa Fěliz are among the featured artists. Contributing pin-up art to the anthology are 2016 grads Erik Klaus and Yosam Cardenas Zavala, as well as current students CJ Oeschele, Anthony Ojedo, Kendal Gates and Bane Wade.

Adventures From Her World

2016 grads Vanessa Solis, Petterson Oliveira and 2015 grad Dov Smilovic, were all part of a great adventure, providing artwork for the comic book, ADVENTURES FROM MY WORLD a comic written by Julie Averbach, which highlights what it's like to have a special needs sibling.

Congratulations to the 38th graduating class of The Kubert School. Our graduation ceremony took place on May 26th at Meadow Wood Manor in Randolph, New Jersey with iconic comic book artist/writer Walt Simonson, as our special guest speaker.


After three years of intensive study and hard work we're proud of graduates and look forward to seeing their work as we send them out into the world.

Our 2016 Scholarship Winners

On Friday May 6th The Kubert School held our annual scholarship ceremony and we presented scholarships to twelve deserving students.

On hand to present the Herb Trimpe Memorial Scholarship, The Gene Colon Memorial Scholarship and the Dave Cockrum Memorial Scholarship were Cliford Meth and Jim Reeber of Aardwolf Publishing.

Bob Almond and Ms Inkwell, Holly Black were here to present the Dave Simons Inkwell Memorial Scholarship. 

Mark Monahan returned again this year to present the Dave Monahan Memorial Scholarship.

Blast from the Past

This past Friday the 22nd there was a mini reunion of sorts as some members of the Class of 1996   returned to visit the school. Shane Hill, Josh Janes, Mike Leonard, John Loftus, Andrew Mayer and Jerry Lindo traveled from near and far to take a stroll down memory lane and celebrate the 20th anniversary of their graduation. 


The group was given a tour by current instructor, Mike Barreiro and got to see a very different building than the one it was twenty years ago.

ZAPP! POW!

This past Saturday, ZAPP Comics in Wayne, New Jersey hosted a Power Rangers sketch party that featured Kubert School students and alumni. Drawing sketches for every sketch cover purchased were students Idan Knafo, Erik Klaus, Emma Kubert, Brian Uglow and 2011 alumni Nick Justus.

DC Comics publisher Dan Didio was on site as part of the In-store Convention Kick-Off which live streamed an interview with the publisher.

Women of Power - March 12th

Saturday, March 12th A Little Shop of Comics in Scotch Plains, New Jersey will be hosting a Women of Power sketch event that will feature three of our amazing students. Emma Kubert, Vanessa Solis and Marki Wolfson will be drawing sketches for customers and accepting commissions.

Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice Day at Barnes & Noble

On Saturday, March 19th Barnes and Noble in Bridgewater, New Jersey will be helping to celebrate the release of the new Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice  movie with a special event. Third year students Brian Uglow and Petterson Oliveira and first year student Sarah Madura will be on hand sketching and drawing for customers.

Kubert School on YouTube

Starting today you'll be able to see some of the amazing special guests who visit the school to talk to our students. Lloyd Briggery our event coordinator has been working on this project for over a year, bringing visiting artists to the school and interviewing them in front of a student assembly. 


Now these sessions are available for all to see on our own YouTube channel, Kubert School Media. Every Tuesday and Thursday a new video will be available. Our first set of videos feature acclaimed artist Simone Bianchi as he talks to our students and gives a painting demonstration.

BACK IN THE RACE!

Kubert School alumni and current instructor, Bob Hardin has a story in the newly revised CARtoons magazine, out now. CARtoons began publication in 1959 and embraced the Hot Rod culture of the 1960's. Bob is a noted car enthusiast and his work previously appeared in the original CARtoons magazine before it folded way back in 1991. Bob teaches 1st year Layout and 2nd year Humor and Caricature classes at the school. .

We are proud to welcome well known comic book artist Rags Morales as an instructor at The Kubert School. Rags is best know for his work at DC Comics, including Black Condor, Identity Crisis and Action Comics. He will be instructing our second year students Story Adaptation classes.
